Walt Disney World has announced its Summer 2026 slate, revealing opening dates, details & discounts. One attraction that made the list but did not receive a reopening date or even a tighter timeline was Rock ‘n’ Roller Coaster Starring the Muppets. However, Disney did make a tease suggesting the thrill ride could reopen earlier than expected. Here’s the latest, along with our commentary.
As basic background, Rock ‘n’ Roller Coaster will soon embark on a Muppets takeover featuring Kermit the Frog, Miss Piggy and more of their friends. The Muppets are in the process of moving right along to Sunset Boulevard, teaming up with some of music’s biggest stars for a rockin’ music festival.
Walt Disney World has really been pulling the curtain back on Rock ‘n’ Roller Coaster Starring The Muppets. We’ve learned about the courtyard, backstory, music, Audio Animatronics, and pre-show stage-setting scene.
If you missed any of this, see the first half of this post: Walt Disney World Reveals Rock ‘n’ Roller Coaster Starring the Muppets Opening Season. That covers everything we know so far about RnRC: Muppets Edition, including the backstory and more.

Rock ‘n’ Roller Coaster Starring The Muppets is expected to be one of the higher profile attraction openings of 2026. That’s definitely true for Walt Disney World and/or Muppets diehards, especially since this ride reimagining was basically an olive branch to fans following the closure of MuppetVision 3D.
While I would personally prefer to have kept that iconic show and gotten a different retheme of RnRC, I certainly can’t complain about this. It’s not as if there was actually a choice between an overlay to RnRC or keeping MV3D. It was this or nothing at all.
I will happily take the new twist on Rock ‘n’ Roller Coaster, and am very optimistic for what I understand to be a labor of love by Imagineering. I’m so looking forward to it, in fact, that it ranks #1 on our list of Rankings & Opening Dates for Disney World’s 14 New Summer Announcements!

Walt Disney World’s official press release of opening dates, deals, and other updates for Summer 2026 mentioned Rock ‘n’ Roller Coaster Starring the Muppets, but declined to share new details. Just this:
This revamped attraction will come speeding into Hollywood Studios this summer, fueled by the fun tunes of the Electric Mayhem and the high-speed hijinks of The Muppets. Stay tuned for more rocking news coming soon!
I could construe that as a tease. It’s the only attraction that got a “stay tuned” while also not having its opening timeline narrowed or pushed back. This is as contrasted with Big Thunder Mountain Railroad, which is now slated to open in early May 2026 (previously just “Spring 2026”). It’s also different than the Magic of Disney Animation across the park at Disney’s Hollywood Studios, which is slated to debut in “late summer.”

There have been a lot of rumors swirling in the week since about Rock ‘n’ Roller Coaster Starring the Muppets, with multiple sources indicating that the project has been fast-tracked and the aim is to open around Memorial Day weekend if at all possible.
I’ll be completely transparent with you: I haven’t heard this directly from anyone associated with the project or credible sources with knowledge of the timeline. I have heard things, but my read on them is that this could be another ‘game of telephone’ scenario where there’s like one actual underlying source.
It’s also possible that people are simply seeing progress on the exterior and speculating. Honestly, there’s a lot that can be surmised by looking at the available evidence and making some educated guesses.

To that point, the single biggest ‘data point’ happened months ago when Walt Disney World Quietly Closed the Rock ‘n’ Roller Coaster Starring Aerosmith Pre-show. The pre-show was walled-off in late November so that Imagineering could get a headstart on reimagining the ride. In the months between then and its permanent closure, RnRC did not have a pre-show.
As we’ve pointed out repeatedly, the trickiest and most time-consuming changes to Rock ‘n’ Roller Coaster will happen in the queue and pre-show. There are at least three Audio Animatronics being added to the pre-show, and that’s not simply a matter of plopping down figures.
There’s all kinds of electrical and other work that needs to be done to prep the space (just look at how long the Hatbox Ghost installation took). We’d also expect modern new screens in the pre-show and plenty of other changes.

Shuttering the pre-show allowed Imagineering the opportunity to start work on the new Muppets takeover of the fan-favorite thrill ride ahead of everything else. With the pre-show walled-off, Disney was able to operate the attraction during the transformation.
That move alone strongly signaled that Walt Disney World wanted to minimize downtime of Rock ‘n’ Roller Coaster to the greatest degree possible. I didn’t need a credible source to tell me that the project had been fast-tracked, as that one move back in November said it loud and clear.
It’s a stark contrast to the approach of taking attractions offline earlier than necessary for operational cost savings (see MuppetVision 3D).

In all likelihood, Imagineering indicated how long the reimagining would take and Walt Disney World has a date by which they want Rock ‘n’ Roller Coaster Starring the Muppets to open. The two then worked backwards from that to figure out a tight timeline missing as few major tourist timeframes as possible to determine a closing date for the Aerosmith version.
Back when the pre-show closed but before Walt Disney World revealed a closing date for Rock ‘n’ Roller Coaster as a whole, my prediction was a ~3 month closure of the attraction. At the time, I said that I wouldn’t be surprised if it’s shorter, but would be shocked if it’s much longer.
I further predicted that Walt Disney World would want RnRC operational through Spring Break, making April 6, 2026 the most logical closing date if the goal was a reopening at the halfway point of summer. In actuality, the closing date was March 2, 2026. This is another big data point for the reopening date, and once again, before any progress began.

The deliberate decision to take Rock ‘n’ Roller Coaster down ahead of the busy Spring Break season said to me that the target was no longer the midway point of summer, but the beginning.
Again, no credible source here. Walt Disney World not waiting one additional month for Easter to pass, at which point there would’ve been smooth-sailing crowds wise for 6 full months, says everything I need to know.
It’s very clear they want Rock ‘n’ Roller Coaster Starring the Muppets to be part of the summer marketing campaign to draw fans to the parks during a time of year that’s otherwise less busy. RnRC is not needed from the perspective of summer capacity (like it is right now!); it’s desired from the perspective of summer marketing.

Of course, it does help that visible progress thus far supports all of these inferences (construction photos above and below graciously provided by friend-of-the-site Drew the Disney Dude).
Walls are also up around the giant guitar, and rolling planters are in front of the attraction entrance. The courtyard remains open at least starting in mid-morning, however, so guests can access Villains Unfairly Ever After.
Already, the upside down super-stretch limo over the archway has been quickly repainted in the psychedelic color scheme of the Electric Mayhem band. Presumably, similar progress has been made on the guitar itself. Most of the repainting that’s going to happen there (at least per the concept art) is on the lower half, so nothing is visible.

The substance of Rock ‘n’ Roller Coaster will not materially change for the most part, so a speedy turnaround is entirely feasible.
The roller coaster track and layout are going to remain unchanged inside the current gravity building. Aside from cosmetically, the ride vehicles are not changing. It’s also likely that the load area, launch, and unload will likely look somewhat similar when all is said and done. Work was already done during two lengthy refurbishments in 2023 and 2024 to give the underlying ride system a shot in the arm and extend the life of the coaster itself.
Imagineering has created story contrivances that offer considerable overlap with Rock ‘n’ Roller Coaster Starring Aerosmith, allowing for a lot of RnRC to remain unchanged. It’s also entirely possible that the current props in the ride-through don’t really change all that much, or are perhaps have a bit of “Muppetization” window-dressing added on top of what’s already there.

The biggest changes will occur in the queue and pre-show, and as discussed above, work on the latter already started months ago. My guess (again, nothing credible) is that a lot of the props inside the attraction have been hauled over from MuppetVision 3D.
Perhaps not given the original storyline for the attraction, but fan service to MV3D seems like the easy and obvious approach. Either way, though, I wouldn’t expect the swapping out of posters and other stuff in the queue to be particularly time-consuming.
My dream is Statler and Waldorf heckling guests at the start of the ride before the first launch, but unless work on that quietly started after hours months ago, that seems exceedingly unlikely.

When it comes to the titular question about the opening date of Rock ‘n’ Roller Coaster Starring the Muppets, anything from a 3-week to a 3-month timeline probably makes the most sense at this point given the pre-show closure and what else we know about the overhaul.
Even with a massive head-start on the pre-show, I’m skeptical of a 4-week turnaround time. If this project could be completed in that duration, its closing date will have made even less sense–the ride basically would’ve been closed for all of Spring Break, only to reopen in time for…the shoulder season? Definitely not happening.
Given all of that, the most plausible official reopening date for Rock ‘n’ Roller Coaster Starring the Muppets is May 26, 2026, alongside everything else at the start of Cool Kids’ Summer. (Even though this ride is technically just for the kids at heart, or bigger kids.) Walt Disney World’s actions to date pretty clearly demonstrate a target date that’s sooner rather than later–and sometimes actions speak louder than words.

Speculating a bit further, I wouldn’t be surprised if the target is earlier than that, with Walt Disney World wanting soft openings or AP and DVC previews during shoulder season. If it’s ready to roll by mid-May, I’d expect previews. If it’s closer to May 22, 2026, soft openings are probably more likely. That’s the date that the new Mandalorian and Baby Yoda mission debut for Millennium Falcon: Smugglers Run; I wouldn’t be surprised if RnRC also reopens in time for that.
At the other end of the spectrum, it’s entirely possible that Rock ‘n’ Roller Coaster Starring the Muppets slips into June or even July 2026. The reason Walt Disney World didn’t announce an official reopening date yet for RnRC is because they’re not confident they can hit whatever the internal target is. (Meaning that, at this point, there are no credible rumors of an official reopening date. They’re all internal targets, and those are often missed!)
When that happens, there’s the possibility of the project being finished ahead of schedule…or delayed. We’re not even a full year removed from going through exactly this with Disney Starlight: Dream the Night Away, which we had likewise once expected/hoped would debut around Memorial Day. (If anything, I think one of the big lessons learned from that was clearly communicating opening timelines as early as possible, and the value of getting new offerings open for the start of summer as opposed to the end.)

As someone playing the long game, I would prefer Rock ‘n’ Roller Coaster Starring the Muppets doesn’t reopen until July 2026. Honestly, before the reopening season was shared, I was really hoping for a Christmas 2026 reopening. And even though I didn’t get a chance to say a proper goodbye, I was heartened when the Aerosmith pre-show closed early.
My perspective is that the longer the closure and the more money spent, the longer Rock ‘n’ Roller Coaster Starring the Muppets sticks around. By extension, the greater the chances this area becomes the new Muppets Courtyard, and that MuppetVision 3D is revived and replaces Villains Unfairly Ever After once Villains Land opens in Magic Kingdom. (Unlikely, but we’re foolishly optimistic.)
Of course, I’m not going to complain if/when Rock ‘n’ Roller Coaster Starring the Muppets is open for my May and June 2026 trips. I will enthusiastically ride it repeatedly (for research, of course). I just want Imagineering to have as much time as needed for this ‘labor of love’ ride reimagining to be as good as possible. If they can accomplish that in fewer than 3 months (plus the added time for the pre-show), more power to them!

Ultimately, we’re cautiously optimistic about Rock ‘n’ Roller Coaster Starring the Muppets–as evidenced by that #1 ranking on our hype list (so perhaps more emphasis on the ‘optimistic’ part and less on the ‘cautiously’ part).
There are hardcore Muppets fans in Walt Disney Imagineering who fought for this project in the first place, and will likewise work tirelessly to ensure the reimagining is well-done, reusing elements from MuppetVision that would otherwise be discarded, and having as much unique Muppets humor as possible.
I can’t wait to see how Imagineers pull off this ride reimagining, even if it’ll never fully replace MuppetVision. Then again, maybe it won’t have to…if they do such a good job that this leads to a future Muppets Courtyard in this area, we could end up with a windfall and the start of a bona fide Muppet renaissance!
